About Leddy Harper

Leddy Harper had to use her imagination often as a child. She grew up the only girl in a house full of boys. At the age of fourteen, she decided to use that imagination and wrote her first book, and never stopped.

She often calls writing her therapy, using it as a way to deal with issues through the eyes of her characters.

She is now a mother of three girls, leaving her husband as the only man in a house full of females.

The decision to publish her first book was made as a way of showing her children to go after whatever it is they want to. Love what you do and do it well. Most importantly Leddy wanted to teach them what it means to overcome their fears.

Susan’s Review: 3 stars

I have to admit, Leddy Harper can write. In here she has given us an angst-filled story that delivers a good message at the end.

However, I’m kind of disappointed. Dane was such a good guy. He was in a miserable place and didn’t exactly realize it until he met Eden. Eden pushes him to make decisions that he’s been avoiding. And here in lies my disappointment. Dane was feeling guilty (and IMO, rightly so…had I realized there was this aspect of the story I probably would not have picked it up to read) and he continued to go back and forth. I wasn’t much happier with Eden. For all her proclaiming of not wanting to push him, she did. And in my thoughts was just as guilty as Dane.

(Single Dads Club #1)

A Sexy RomCom Standalone

EXCERPT

There are at least ten camp counselors currently standing in the water watching the children, and six of them are female. Victor doesn’t understand the epidemic he’s going to have on his hands. The longer I sit there, the more dads find their way down to the lake, thinking it’s an everyday Thursday pickup. To their surprise, it’s a teenage boy’s wet dream. And maybe that teenage boy’s dad’s, too.

Caterina is laughing with another female counselor. I never noticed how her cheeks rise into two small apples when she smiles. Nor did I notice the way her hands cover her mouth to stifle a laugh or how she briefly touches the other person’s arm when she’s amused. Damn, I want to pull that reaction out of her.

But all I’ve gotten this week since camp started is a few polite smiles and ‘hello Mr. Kent.’ She hasn’t acted as though I’ve seen more of her than what that bikini she’s wearing reveals.

“What did I miss?” Dane sits down next to me, trying to catch his breath.

“What the hell do you do all day that you can’t be here on time?”

He glances over to me and then concentrates ahead of him. I can’t blame him, we don’t get views like this in Climax Cove very often.

“Does Victor realize he’s giving every dad here beat off material for tonight?” Dane asks. A few of the dads milling about laugh, knowing it’s true.

A small ball of anger begins brewing in my center. The idea of these dickheads thinking about what’s under the blue bikini hugging Cat’s tits gets under my skin. That beat off material is for me and only me.

“And to answer your question, I had to go down to the county for some paperwork.”

Dane’s been doing some heavy renovations to Happy Daze the last few years, expanding and making it a more family-friendly bar and grill during the day.

“Sorry, that sucks.”

Both of us continue our conversation as we pretend to watch our children. I can multitask though. My gaze veers to Lily to make sure she’s not drowning, but she’s taken swimming lessons since she was one, so I don’t have to worry too much.

“We can talk about that shit later.” Dane waves me off. “Fuck, this is so not fair. How is my kid getting more action than I’ve seen this week?” He bites his fist, watching Toby and his friends pour a bucket of water over his camp counselor’s head. Her yellow bikini doesn’t exactly hide the fact the water might have been slightly chilly.

Lily looks away from the action in the lake, finds me sitting there, and smiles. “Why do I suddenly feel dirty?” I mumble to myself.

Lily runs from the lake and Caterina says something to one of the other counselors and follows Lily’s path. Our eyes lock, but Cat is quick to shift her focus elsewhere.

“Daddy!” Lily screams and jumps into my arms, soaking me in the process.

“Hi, sweetie.” I prop her on my knee.

“Hi, Uncle Dane,” her sweet voice says.

I clear my throat so he’ll turn his attention from the lake to my daughter. Dane turns to me, back to the lake, and then realizes why I’m clearing my throat.

“Hey, kiddo. Swim day, huh?” He leans back on his hands, focusing his attention on her.

“Come.” She jumps down from my lap and grabs my hand.

“No, sweetie. I’ll wait until you’re done. Go have fun with your friends.”

She smiles and runs off.

“Damn, a little warning, huh? I’m practically tucking my dick between my legs,” Dane says and shifts in his seat.

“Um, how do you think I feel?”

“Who’s the dickhead?” Dane asks, head nodding to the lake.

One of the male camp counselors approaches Cat. She laughs at his joke and shakes her head. I don’t miss the way his eyes light up when she puts her hand on his forearm.

“Who?” I pretend my heart isn’t skipping beats from the adrenaline coursing through my system. Just call me a fucking caveman.

“Yeah, okay. Your eyes have been glued to one counselor, in particular, this whole week.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I glance around to make sure no other parents overheard us.

“Is that how you’re gonna play it?” he asks, turning toward me and raising his eyebrows in question.

I say nothing, watching the dickhead pick up Caterina by the waist, her squealing and him dropping her in the deeper part of the lake. She stands up and now she’s dripping wet in her blue bikini that probably matches the color of my balls.

Once again, I swear her gaze veers over to me as she pushes her hands through her drenched hair. Before I can be certain, she’s concentrating on the kids again. She claps her hands and announces swim time is over for her group.

“Man, your chick is a fun sponge,” Dane says because Toby’s camp counselor is still in a water battle with her kids.

I push off the picnic table to head over to pick up Lily and gather her things.

Red Flags…

Too loud.
Too clingy.
Too much make-up.

I could go on and on. The other guys in the Single Dad’s Club would say I’m obsessed with finding them. But none of their kid’s mothers call a maximum-security prison home either, so their opinions mean shit.

Caterina Santora has her own list of red flags…

She’s too young.
She’s my client’s daughter.
She’s my five-year old’s camp counselor.

Even after repeating this mantra to myself every morning on the way to Lily’s summer camp, guess what happens the moment I see Cat? Yeah, that mantra turns into ride me, doggie style and reverse cowgirl.

Every. Damn. Time.

The fact that she doesn’t remember me from six years before grates on me until I don’t have it in me to leave her alone any longer. I have to have her. But our lives are opposites in every way. In no way compatible.

When we’re together all the complications fade away and I have to keep reminding myself, even if I can have her— I can’t keep her.

Ahhh, a sexy single dad! What fun! Where are those men in real life? Wait, I’m married so it shouldn’t matter. I could *look* though 😉

After reading the Modern Love series by this author duo, and loving it, I had high expectations for this. They delivered! This was funny in some parts, most definitely steamy, and quite honestly, Marcus had me a little mad through most of it LOL I didn’t find Marcus as swoony as previous heroes from them. He had a bit of an edge to him and could be rather jerky. He was sexy as all get out and I loved his take charge attitude in the bedroom. It was when he was out of the bedroom that aggravated me. He ran hot and cold with Cat because of an ex who he had a kid with.

I loved Cat! When we met her in Tahlia’s book, I loved her spunk. She didn’t disappoint here. She has grown up and knows her mind. I’m glad she called Marcus out on his inability to commit…that’s what it boiled down to for him. I also loved that Cat realized what she wanted from her time in Climax Cove and let me just say, YAY! (I’m trying not to give away too much LOL)

Both Marcus and Cat had interesting friends. I think I know where their books will lead us. Dane needs a strong woman. That’s all I have to say on that LOL It was great to see Lucas and Tahlia in the future and to hear about Lennon. Those girls (and Whitney) will always have a special place in my heart for introducing me to Piper Rayne 🙂

Guzzi Duet, Part One

Cara Rossi’s life has been a mess ever since her identical twin was killed. She blames the mafia, its ways, and the people within the caustic culture for a painful reality that turned her world on its side. In an attempt to momentarily pause her misery, a night out puts her on a path with a man she shouldn’t get involved with simply because of his last name—Gian Guzzi.

He’s the kind of man that makes it hard to say no.

Gian Guzzi’s problems are piling up fast. A murdered grandfather, an unpredictable mafia, and a new boss that threatens both his family’s legacy and his life. As a Cosa Nostra underboss, Gian has a duty. First to la famiglia, and only then to himself. In the midst of the violent uncertainty that has become unrelenting in his days, Cara Rossi should only be a distraction for him to enjoy.

She’s a happiness that he was never allowed to choose before.

His lies.
This life.
Their love.

It all unravels eventually.

EXCERPT

“You could try not to antagonize him as much,” Bambi said quietly.

Gian turned to face the woman again. “Like he does for me?”

“That’s just Stephan’s ways.”

“And those ways will eventually get him killed.”

Bambi frowned, but wisely chose not to respond. Then, she turned and said something to the woman at her side but a couple of seats away in the booth, drawing Gian’s attention there.

To the redhead.

A woman he thought he hadn’t known from Adam. She had been so quiet at the table, her attention on the few people at a booth across the way from theirs, and not making a spectacle of herself as Stephan had done for him and Bambi. It suddenly made sense then why Constantino had not been treating the girl as a disinterested date.

It was his cousin, or rather, one of them.

At first, Gian thought Lea Rossi. But his mind quickly corrected that, as Lea Rossi’s death—an event that had been widely publicized due to the nature of the murder—had happened months ago. He only knew of the Rossi twins, as their uncle was an older Capo for the Guzzi famiglia.

Gian had met Lea Rossi on a scarce few occasions when their paths crossed for different events or whatever, but he had never sat down and had an actual conversation with the girl. He had been told by Constantino—the twins’ cousin—that the twins lived in Toronto.

He knew Lea had a twin. He did not realize her twin was identical.

That red hair of hers that had been so striking under the club lights from up above was even more stunning close up. A shade that a woman couldn’t buy in a bottle, and couldn’t quite be duplicated in a salon.

A black double-wrapped velvet choker rested around her throat, showcasing tanned skin and the delicate line of her neck. A simple bow was tied at the middle, making Gian wonder what she would look like with a choker on, looking up from her knees.

He wasn’t quite sure why that idea came on, but it was a good one.

Cara, he thought her name was. Wasn’t that what Constantino had said before about his cousins—Lea and Cara.

Gian didn’t pay attention to names unless it served him some purpose to.

Her ice-blue eyes looked him over, and Gian was taken aback by the lack of makeup on her pixie-like features. Most woman put too much makeup on instead of too little, determined to make a man focus on attributes instead of imperfections. But all she wore was just enough to shape her wide eyes, and a red tint on her full lips that matched the color of her hair.

From what he could see, her tight black dress fit to her curves perfectly, and guessing by the way she crossed her legs out to the side, she was not a short woman.

Beautiful.

Natural.

Sexy.

All of that and more came to mind.

“You stare a lot, don’t you?” the woman asked.

Gian came out of the daze with a bang. “Am I not allowed to stare?”

Bambi glanced away from the two, hiding her smile. “I think I’ll go find Stephan and see what’s taking him so long.”

Do that, Gian wanted to say.

He said nothing until Bambi was gone. The two men left at the booth quickly followed her lead, leaving Gian alone with the beautiful redhead. He didn’t sit, though, simply stayed where he was.

“It’s Cara, right?”

She glanced up, her blue eyes widening further. “How do you know my name?”

Gian smirked. “Family friends.”

“Right.” Cara flashed him one of her own smiles. “It’s Gian, right? Gian Guzzi.”

He lifted a single brow. “My name is well-known around this place.”

“The owner—I know. Constantino told me.”

“Oh?”

“And Guzzi isn’t exactly a … little name, either.”

“Would you like a drink, Cara?”

She didn’t even think about it before saying, “No.”

“A dance?”

“No.”

“Then why are you here?” Gian lifted a hand, waving at the club behind him. “That’s sort of what you do in a club, bella donna.”

“I do speak some Italian.”

“Good, then you know what I think of you. A very beautiful woman.”

She did manage a smile that was slightly truer than her first. “You’re terribly arrogant. Flash a smile, say a few pretty words, and I bet most women eat out of the palm of your hand.”

“The men of my family like to say it’s a learned talent, actually.” He grinned, and didn’t miss how for a moment, Cara was silenced by the sight. “And as of right now, I’m not trying any of those things on you.”

“How do you hold all that cockiness and those damn grins in then?”

“I don’t.”

“And everyone melts.”

“I’m not looking at everyone. I’m looking at you.”

*REVIEW* The Bad Luck Bride by Janna MacGregor

Susan’s Review: 4 stars

I’ve been on a huge contemporary romance reading streak. This has gone on so long that I was telling my BFF, Amanda, that I felt like I was entering a reading slump. I told her I might need to change my sub-genre to fantasy or historical to kick me out of it. So, this was on my kindle from the publisher and I decided to read it next to see if it made me happier. IT DID!

This was awesome! Well written, great characters, a little angst due to Alex and Claire’s secrets, and even some action/adventure there towards the end. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but just know that Alex begs for forgiveness REALLY well ;0)

The set up for the next book is great and I can’t wait to read it!

But when the rescue effort stumbles, Gabe must pick up the pieces to protect the woman he loves before she makes the ultimate sacrifice.

Susan’s Review: 3 stars

This book starts off with action and keeps going from there. Apparently this follows closely behind the first book in the series, Lauren, which I didn’t read. I was a bit confused at first, but caught on quickly.

I liked the pace of this and the fact that it was centered around biotech stuff rather than the usual drug stuff most romantic suspense books center on.

Worse, the private protection firm Edeena hires is run by the most infuriating man she’s ever met–a rough-hewn, dark-eyed, charismatic charmer named, of course, Prince. this moved a little slow for me for most of the first half. I felt like nothing was happening except to talk about the curse and what could be done to break it. After about the 45% mark though, things improved.

Vince was adorable! He was loyal and protective and I loved that he wanted more for Edeena than she could see herself having.

*REVIEW BLITZ* Sex in the Sticks by Sawyer Bennett

Wake up and feel the wood! In the first of a series of irresistible standalone romances from New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett, a city girl rediscovers love and lust in the Alaskan wilderness.

Valentine French may be the sassiest dating columnist in New York City, but the abundance of metrosexuals in her adopted metropolis is seriously cramping her style. Where are the beefy all-American boys? Hoping to find some inspiration, Val heads to Alaska, where the men outnumber the women fifteen to one and wrestle grizzly bears for sport. Or so she can only imagine. Suddenly the most eligible bachelorette in a town full of horny lumberjacks, Val is writing her best columns ever. But if she doesn’t get her nose out of her laptop, she just might miss out on Mr. Right.

Logan Burke is the sheriff of the little podunk town that Val finds so charmingly backward. He’s not that different from the guys she’s using for her little experiment; it’s just that one date would never be enough for Logan. As he listens to Val complain about love over beers in the local tavern, he realizes that she can’t see the forest for the trees. Because if she would ever give up her Prada bags and fourteen-dollar martinis, Logan would give her the only luxury that matters: his heart.

Susan’s Review: 4 stars

I really liked this! It was light and funny and the scenes between Logan and Valentine were steamy 🙂 I do think Logan was a bit harsh to Val there towards the end. I get why he reacted that way, but he was jerky. Otherwise, he would have been a perfect book boyfriend. The secondary cast of characters were awesome and I can see quite a few books coming in the future for this series. I’ll be looking forward to them.

The Negotiator, an all-new sexy, romantic comedy standalone from Avery Flynn is now LIVE!!!

51sxOwI5FpL

The Negotiator by Avery Flynn

Release Date: April 24th, 2017

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Wanted: Personal Buffer

Often snarly, workaholic executive seeks “buffer” from annoying outside distractions AKA people. Free spirits with personal boundary issues, excessive quirks, or general squeamishness need not apply. Salary negotiable. Confidentiality required.

Workaholic billionaire Sawyer Carlyle may have joked he needed a buffer from their marriage-obsessed mom, but he didn’t need a waiting room filled with candidates to further distract him. (Thanks, bro.) But when a sexy job applicant shooes his mom and the socialite in tow out of his office, Sawyer sees the genius of the plan. And the woman. In fact, Miss Clover Lee might just get the fastest promotion in history, from buffer to fake fiancé…

This free-spirit might look like hot sunshine and lickable rainbows, but she negotiates like a pitbull. Before Sawyer knows what hit him, he’s agreed to give up Friday nights for reality tv, his Saturdays for flea markets (why buy junk still baffles him), his Tuesdays and Thursdays for date nights (aka panty-losing opportunities if he plays his cards right). And now she wants lavender bath salts and tulips delivered every Monday?

Yup, she’s just screwing with him. Good thing she’s got this non-negotiable six-weeks-and-she’s-gone rule or Sawyer may have just met this match…

Excerpt:

A teasing promise lit her eyes. “And I never would have guessed you didn’t have any experience working with your hands.”

Now that was just a straight up lie. “I never said that. You know very well that I’m good with my hands.” He reached out and tucked a stray blonde hair behind her ear, letting his touch linger. “Very good.”

Her breath caught, but she didn’t move away as his fingers trailed down the soft column of her neck. Her pulse thrummed under his touch and one glance down at the hard peaks pushing against her thin T-shirt confirmed she was skating along the same fault line between sanity and lust that he was.

“Are you flirting with me?” she asked, her voice breathy.

“No.” He didn’t flirt. That was Hudson. Sawyer was the grumpy brother. He never flirted. Still, his hand didn’t drop from where he was touching her and he couldn’t tear his gaze away from her perfect pink mouth.

“Of course not.” She leaned forward, cutting the distance between them, so close he could feel her soft breath against his skin. “That would violate the contract.”

The temptation to dip his head the few inches to kiss her had his entire body hard and wound tight with anticipation. Lust ran through him like a runaway freight train. The little voice in the back of his head screaming that this was a bad idea suffered the same fate as it had in the supply closet last night: death by ignoring. Clover Lee had that effect on him. It was going to be a very long month and a half.

“The napkin didn’t say anything about flirting,” he said.

No, he was totally free to give himself blue balls the size of watermelons every time he came near his personal buffer.

“Ah-ha!” The triumphant sound escaped her lush lips as she straightened, expanding the space between them and dislodging his hand from her soft skin. “You are flirting.”

Was he? No. He was torturing himself. That was a very different sort of hell. “You take all the fun out of things.”

“No way.” She shook her head, the movement letting a few more silky strands loose from the knot on the top of her head. “I am the definition of fun. If it wasn’t for me, you’d still be in your office banging on your keyboard.”

“I don’t bang.”

“Not me, you don’t,” She shot him a cocky smirk. “It’s in the contract.”

Y’all, this was right up my alley! A fake to real story line that had humor and some angst towards the end. Awesome!

Sawyer Carlyle is in of a buffer…a personal buffer to run interference from his mom’s match-making. So his brother runs an ad and sends interviewees to Sawyer, unbeknownst to him. Clover is waiting for her interview with Sawyer when Mrs. Carlyle comes in. Clover figures the way to get the job is to do what was called for, she gets her to back off. Needless to say, she gets the job! But it gets better because Sawyer decides to make her his fake fiancee so his mother will back off all the way and he can finish the deal that’s been three years in the making. What Sawyer doesn’t plan for is to fall for Clover as they are spending time together to make the fake engagement look real. Will he realize he loves her before it’s too late?

Tons of banter between Clover and Sawyer. Also tons of hot steamy times. I loved Clover. She was a free spirit who looked at everything as an adventure. I wish I was brave enough to just pick up and go like she did. She was sharp and witty and had a great heart 🙂

Excerpt from Rebel Custody:

Chapter One

Skeeter

I liked to keep my back to the wall. It was a habit I developed in the Registan Desert. But tonight I was just in a neighborhood hangout, a strip club called Jiggles. I surveyed the strip club from a corner near the pool tables. A woman danced onstage while a rock song played. The booming bass had a slight buzz. The strip club’s sound system had blown a few speakers last year, but no one bothered to replace them.

When it was my turn, I leaned across the green felt. Bank shot. Three ball into the corner pocket. I closed my eyes and let the cue slide through my fingers. The balls cracked together. I heard the thump off the side cushion and then the rattle as the ball sank into the pocket. Easy.

I opened my eyes to set up my next shot.

“Hey, genius.” Clint laughed. “You’re stripes. Thanks for taking care of one of my balls, though.”

Fuck. I looked at the table. He was right; I was stripes. I hadn’t been paying attention. Instead of returning to my favorite spot against the wall, I sat on a stool in front of the bar.

“Hi, baby.” Asia, one of my favorite pay-to-play hookups, leaned in close. “I’d be happy to take care of your balls, but how about you buy me a drink first?”

I rolled my eyes and asked the bartender to get her a beer.

Asia pouted. “You haven’t called me in weeks.” She stuck her lower lip out. “I could call a friend, and the three of us could have our own personal party. Remember how fun it was that time?”

Tempting. Asia was always enthusiastic and willing to please in bed, especially if it would earn her a big tip.

“Actually, I don’t really remember much of that night.” I sipped on my beer. “I haven’t been in the mood lately.”

“Oh!” She smiled and started to root through her huge purse. “I got stuff for that.”

I put my hand on her shoulder. “That’s not what I meant. I’m just not interested, okay?”

What the hell was wrong with me? Asia was tall with long legs that she could bend any which way I wanted. And her fees were reasonable. But sex had just lost its thrill. It was the same old shit. Women in skimpy outfits trying to entice me to buy, which I often did. Then a meaningless meet-up in my room at the clubhouse and a morning alone.

Maybe I could soften the blow. “Why don’t you go hang out with Clint?”

We both looked over at him—he was chatting up a blonde stripper in a purple dress. Asia frowned.

“Well, maybe I’ll just make a new friend tonight. Thanks.” She walked away, hips swinging. I knew she wanted me to take a good look at her ass and change my mind, but I just didn’t care.

Leaning against the bar, I finished off my beer and surveyed the room. Hanging out at a strip club every Friday night was getting tiring. The constant noise and empty flirting made me wish for a night at home, and not just a night in my room at the MC. I bought a house last year and never fucking stayed there. I was always partying. Maybe it was time to move.

I tried to catch Clint’s eye; I was thinking of making the long drive out to my place. He was still talking to the blonde, so I decided to hit the john. Strip club bathrooms were always nasty. No matter how much froufrou crap they piled in there, it was still a urinal in a titty house.

As I was zipping up, something touched the back of my neck.

Cold. Hard. Steel.

Fuck.

“Thought I’d find you here.”

The man’s thick Cajun accent brought me home, the voice vaguely familiar. My father’s face floated in my head before I remembered the fucking gun pressed to my neck.

“I know you?” I started to turn to see who this fucker was.

He cocked the hammer. I froze. It’s a distinctive click, and when it’s pressed below your ear, it’s real fucking loud.

“Well, then put away the gun and we’ll go get a beer.” The barrel pressing into my neck eased off, and I heard him release the hammer. “I’m turning around now,” I told him.

Holding the pistol was Davide Lavernge. A year or two behind me in school, he had been a class clown who dealt a little weed on the side.

“How ’bout dat drink?” He grinned.

Davide followed me over to the bar, and we ordered a round. I sucked on my beer and studied the piece of shit next to me. His sour breath wafted over from two bar stools away. He smelled like crawfish three days after the boil.

Davide licked the salt off his lips and combed peanut shells out of his beard. His face was lined and weathered, his teeth yellow. He was no longer the happy-go-lucky guy I used to know.

“Tacoma, Washington, is damn far from Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. What’re you doing this far north, Davide?”

He put down the beer I had paid for and turned toward me. “I’m here about child support.”

He must be in a shit ton of trouble if he was coming to me for help. I shrugged. “How much do you owe?”

He shook his head. “You owe me, Skeeter. Forty large. I been taking care of your kid.”

The world went fuzzy, so I blinked. Again. My vision was clear, but my brain didn’t quite understand what Davide had just said.

Embrasse moit chew.” Kiss my ass. I pushed back from the bar. “I haven’t been back to Breaux Bridge in years. I don’t got no kid.”

Davide scratched at his beard. “After you joined the Army, Delphie realized she was pregnant. She decided she wanted to raise it on her own. That’s why she dumped you.”

Delphie. My first love. We had been nineteen and full of dreams. Well, I was full of dreams, and she was full of meth, weed, whatever else she could get her hands on. I put a tiny ring on her finger and then packed up for boot camp. The letter came two days after I arrived in Afghanistan. Classic Dear John. I read it in my bunk and then had to find a private place to fucking punch something. A captain saw me, and I spent the next three weeks cleaning latrines in the Registan Desert.

I narrowed my eyes. I wasn’t about to fall for his line of shit. “She never told me she was pregnant.”

“Don’t matter. You got a kid that you ain’t never paid child support for. So, by my accounting, you owe me forty Gs.” Davide shrugged and stuffed more peanuts in his mouth.

I rolled my eyes. That’s what this was about. “This is a goddamn shakedown. If there was a kid, Delphie would be serving me with papers. You’re bullshitting me, and you fucking know it.”

Davide stared at me, cold, hard. This was not the man I used to know. Back then he sold a little weed and raised a lot of hell. He was always quick to laugh, the life of the boil. Whatever he was into now had changed him.

“Delphie overdosed about six years ago. Don’t matter, though. You got a fucking kid, and I want my fucking money. Once you get that through your head, call me. Else I’ll come find you again. I promise you that.” He handed me an old-fashioned matchbook with the name of a dive motel and a cell phone number scrawled in pencil. “Kid is here with me.”

Davide got up and left me with the tab.

The matchbook was blue with a red stylized horse. Cowboy Motel. Printed on the back was a map. It was just off the highway, south of town, in the middle of a bunch of apple orchards. Tourists would drive right on by and find a room in Seattle or Tacoma. This place was meant only for truckers or the kind of people who didn’t like to deal with society. The kind of people who would blackmail someone for child support for a kid that didn’t exist.

This was just another way for the Lavernge family to screw me over. Delphie had dumped me as soon as deeper pockets had come along, and now Davide was trying to milk me for all I was worth. I had enough to make ends meet, but forty grand wasn’t sitting in my back pocket for a rainy day.

I ran my thumb over the top of the matchbook and felt ridges. In the light of the bar, I could just make out indentations from a pen. Something was written on the inside. I flipped open the damn matchbook and saw a drawing. There wasn’t much room, but someone had drawn a sun with sunglasses. The rays of the sun weren’t quite even, and the lines all wobbled. A kid had drawn it.

What if I did have a kid? What if Delphie had been pregnant when I shipped out? I did some quick calculations. The kid would be nine or ten. I thought of myself at that age, all skinned knees and dirty hands. If I had a kid, what would he or she be like?

I flipped the matchbook over and stared at the map printed on the back. Same shitty location, right off the interstate. Davide was pretty desperate if he’d come all the way up here to Washington State hoping to get a lot of cash. I didn’t know what Davide was mixed up in, but it was bad, and no child should be caught up in it.

I paid my tab and went to find Clint at the pool table. If this was blackmail, I was gonna need reinforcements.

* * *

An hour later me and Rip and Clint cut our engines and parked in a field behind the motel. It was easy to track down which room belonged to Davide. There was a beat-up blue truck with Louisiana plates parked at the far end, as far away as possible from the motel office and the security camera.

So we crouched with ivy up to our goddamn shoulders and waited. The lights flickered in the room, like someone was watching television.

“Shit, Skeeter, it’s been forty-five minutes,” Clint muttered in our ivy hole.

A sliver of light shone in the dark motel as someone opened their door. It was a woman coming out for a smoke. She collapsed into a plastic patio chair and lit up a joint. Too short to be Delphie, dark hair. Craggy face. Torn jean shorts. Maybe Davide’s girlfriend? Under the hyperfocus of the binoculars, she looked worn.

Then Davide came out and sat in the other chair. They passed a joint back and forth. The door opened again and showed a small, dark figure. With the bright light of the inside of the room, the person’s features were in shadow. The shadow only went a foot or so past the doorknob. A kid

My heart leaped up into my throat. I tried to breathe, but it just came out as a guttural sound. Even though I couldn’t see the kid clearly, I knew. It was like a brush stroke inside my brain that spread truth. Davide hadn’t come all the way across the country just to shake me down. He was telling the truth.

Holy shit.

I had a kid.

Susan’s Review: 3.5 – 4 stars

I totally got excited when I realized our hero is from south Louisiana since that is where I’m from…you can take the girl out of Louisiana, but you can’t take Louisiana out of the girl.  In fact, I have family who live in the city Skeeter was from, so reading the Cajun French and imagining his accent was NO PROBLEM 🙂  I have to admit though, I’ve never met anyone who’s name is Jean Luc LOL
I loved the chemistry between Skeeter and Miri, but I found this really slow moving.  Lots of back and forth between them.  They were like awkward teenagers going on their first date ever.  They weren’t sure what to say, whether or not to touch, blurting questions and then not understanding the answer since it wasn’t presented the way it should have.  You get the picture.  Once we got over all that (and it took a while), I loved this!
